i'm glad you asked!
well i'm gonna start with the comparatively boring stuff. i went with my (wonderfully supportive, patient) mom. it was about a 5 hour car ride to Charlotte, which wasn't so bad...largely uneventful lmao. we arrived at the hotel around dinnertime, i'm fairly sure. it wasn't a great room. there was no toilet seat, and the bathroom door was barely holding on, having been split nearly in two at the seams. i was out of it enough that i was just ready to suffer in silence, but my mom really came through with getting us a new room. ...i dont really want too stay in a days inn again, though, 'cuz it looked like our new room had never seen a mop, the tap leaked, and the microwave had a habit of catching things on fire. ho-hum, so it goes. i think we could've stayed in a hole in the ground and i still wouldve been excited for the concert, lmao.
alright, here's the exciting stuff. the day of the concert, we decided to hit the town a little--well, quite a few hours early. we wound up at a cool little asian grocery/food court, where we got some snacks (i love barley tea!), and wasted some money on gatcha machines, lol. i'm the proud owner of several novelty keychains now, though.
i was antsy the whole time lol, hard not to be, so we wound up leaving a bit earlier than we probably shouldve. it was like an hour thirty before our parking pass opened, and a ten minute drive to the spectrum center. oops. the old adage held true-- city slickers can't fucking drive. after a few tense minutes, we wound up at a place called the Midnight Diner for dinner before the show...i really recommend it if youre ever in town. the staff were friendly (shout out to our poor waiter, who'd seen a shit ton of goths trickling in all day, and had to ask us about the band.), and i had an egg biscuit i really should've taken a picture of or something, 'cuz it was great. i had a lot of fun peoplewatching out the windows...it was obivous who was going to the concert later. ive never seen such a high population density of goths in one area before, much less happy goths. anyway, with dinner out of the way, we set back out on the road looking for our parking garage. we promptly, briefly (thank god!), got lost. we wound up at the wrong garage, but a very nice parking attendant pointed us in the right direction. (...thank god!) finding our way to the venue on foot was easy enough-- follow the other goths.
we got there surprisingly early, considering we were...late! we actually had a great place in line. as dusk fell, we watched people wind down, down the sidewalk, and we were only about 30 people from the gate, before we got into shorter single file lines. (exciting!) my mom bought a knock off shirts from one of those random vendors that like to hang around these sort of things. i tried to warn her against it, 'cuz you never know how the print quality will turn out on those things--blah blah--but the shirt wound up kicking ass. it rules. the print on the front has glitter. (refer to the merch section) ...the official merch doesn't have that. really shows what i know, huh?
anywho. id been having trouble with my ticket, because my barcode wasn't showing up...turns out it was an nfc scan. go figure. we got in no problem. the atmosphere inside was electric. there were people there dressed to the nines, i'm talking full vampire getup. frankly, it was awesome, but i was pretty comfortable in my layered t shirt and jeans. more power to em, yknow...the temp was in the 60s in fucking febuary. i even recognized some people from the nin discord, which was cool, but i didnt wind up saying hi-- i could barely talk to my mom, i was so overwhelmed, LOL. i spent wayyyyy too much on two shirts and a hat, (refer to the...you know.) and my mom and i found our way to our seats. my mom grabbed a few things from the concession stand, including a white claw, which i wrote about in my notes saying: "i had two (2) sips because theres no way in hell i was leaving to piss at any moment."
we actually had great seats, surprisingly. shockingly close to the stage for how much i paid for them, frankly. lets see...the show kicked off with boys noize. he was good, but...to be honest, it felt like he was up there forever. anticipation, yknow. my earplugs sure came in handy--i think his set was louder than the main show. i have the most pictures of mr.boy, i think, just because i wasnt as caught up in dancing/screaming the lyrics. eek. ...i cant think of a place to put this, but yelling FIST FUCK was a religious experience.
the main show...relying on my notes is a little more difficult here, because, again, i was paying more attention to the performers. trent took the middle stage as he played 'home' on the keyboard. immediate waterworks on my end...i'm sensitive, ok?? from here, i have written: "trent petted atticus during piggy." well, he did.
the guy beside us kept glancing back at me, probably bc i was screaming incoherently along to the lyrics the whole time-- i couldnt hear shit outside of my earplugs, so i only have the faintest idea of what was leaving my mouth. sorry, guy. the lighting was crazy, especally during head like a hole. blinding! it was really fantastic during what i've refered to in my notes as the "Trent Atticus Boy Cube," which made up for the fact that i didnt exactly love mr.boy's remixes. sorry. i had a ton of fun watching them perform them, but boy's synthline sounded exactly like the one he'd been using for the entire preshow. kinda drove me nuts. i lost my shit when i heard the opening notes of 'only.' i really wasn't expecting to hear them play that...turns out it was the first time they'd played it on the tour. cant believe they did that for me. :^p
halfway through, trent paused to thank the individual members of the band. i thought that was pretty awesome. i mean, everyone was great. i think this show instilled in me a deep respect for robin fink as a performer in particular. he was electric! trent was a superstar, too, but you probably don't need me to tell you that. i haven't mentioned it yet, but he was great-wonderful-awesome in 'copy of a.' the stage lighting and projections really elevated this one.
the show ended with 'hurt,' as expected (and appreceated lol), and it was just beautiful. screamed myself hoarse again right before the end. the stage lights were blinding again...and it was over. how surreal.
we all stumbled out of the venu after that, and i remember thinking i could really use another white claw. or a smoke. HAHA.
well...this is probably where the recounting will get less interesting. i mostly want to write it down for my own sake. :^]
we spent the next day out on the town again. mom and i wound up at a...kind of shitty mall, where i spent too much money on shirts (the second time i did this on the trip. sob.) at a hot topic. it was worth popping in, though, i got to have a fun conversation with the clerk about iron lung. when's the dvd release, mark. i had some pretty good mall pizza and salad after. i guess they cancelled each other out so its like a net zero on the health scale, right? whatever. anyway, we went to a bookstore-- Book Buyers. it was an interesting little place. i didn't find anything, but the store has three VERY friendly, chatty cats who i became well acquainted with. there was a video store in the same shopping center(!) that i spent a good long while poking around in after the book store. i'm lucky we're not local, i guess. my wallet weeps in relief. (they're actually a non-profit...peep their website [here] :^] )
our last stop that day was a record store, where i almost bought a record player, until the guy tried to upsell me on an amp. i just wanted a turntable...;_; saved me some cash though, i guess. oh well. my hunt for a decent record player...goes on. we wound up eating dinner at the hotel room, just 'cuz we were so tired and...frankly, paralyzed by choice re: the surrounding varitey of resturaunts.
the next day, day 4!, we woke up early and started the trek home. we had a pretty darn good breakfast at a cracker barrel on the interstate. after getting back on the road, we...decided to take the scenic route. it took us through north carolina, south carolina, GEORGIA, back through south carolina, and, finally, blessedly, tennessee. the trip sure was scenic. it was fun, we wound up making our way through a national park, but i spent a leg of the trip having to piss so bad. so bad. plus, i had a nutso allergy attack going through south carolina. so it goes! i still had a blast lol.
...and here we reach the end of our journey...and my notes. hope you had fun. i sure did! :^]
